What Makes A Great Home? Things to Look For When Shopping for Your Next House

When searching for a new home, it can be very easy to get overwhelmed by choice. Once you’ve decided on the area that you want to live in and the size of the home you want, narrowing things down can be difficult. However, there are certain small features and qualities that can make the difference between a mediocre living space and a place that feels like home. Here are some features to keep your eye out for when house shopping.

Lighting

One of the things that can have a huge impact on how happy you are in your home is the amount of light that is brought into the space. When you spend too much time in a house that is very dark, it can have a negative effect on your mood and even make you feel unproductive. Look for homes that have lots of windows or even a skylight – having sunlight streaming in throughout the day can make a big difference in your comfort levels. You may also want to consider the amount of overhead lighting in the home, as this can also make the space more pleasant and comfortable.

Yard Space

Although a big yard isn’t necessarily a prerequisite for everyone, it is a great feature to have if you have children or outdoor pets, or even just if you enjoy spending your free time outdoors. A yard offers tons of possibilities – you can garden, play sports, host outdoor gatherings, and much more. While it may require a bit of maintenance, you’ll be happy to have it on warm, pleasant weekend days.

Well-Functioning Appliances

Yes, you can always replace a noisy refrigerator or an ineffective microwave, but this can be a headache and requires spending extra money. Spend a good amount of time evaluating the kitchen to make sure that everything is working properly. You may even want to test things out to see if they work as well as promised – nothing is more frustrating than moving in somewhere, only to find out that only half the burners on the stove work or the dishwasher is broken.

Proximity to Main Roads and Public Transit

Even if you have a great car that you don’t mind driving, you can’t deny the convenience of being able to get where you want to go quickly. Consider how long it will take you to get to the nearest highway or through street, and think not only about your daily commute to work, but also how you would get to other important locations, such as the grocery store, your doctor, or even your favorite restaurant. Consider public transit as well – being located near a train or bus stop can save you tons of money and gas, and it will allow you to stay mobile, even if your car isn’t working.

Good Proportions

The size of each room in a house is a factor that many people don’t think about, but can actually really affect how comfortable you are there. If the rooms are too large or too small for the size of the house, you may end up feeling claustrophobic or like you can’t fill the space adequately. It’s also important to consider how the rooms flow together – it should be easy to get from room to room.

Heating and Cooling

In all but the most pleasant climates, having a good heating system is a must, so you’ll want to make sure that the rooms heat up evenly and comfortably. If you live in an area where it gets very hot during the summer, you may also want to invest in a home with a good cooling system, or at least some ceiling fans. This can help you feel much more comfortable in your home when it’s sweltering outside.
